The invention or rather the development in the technology of
internet has been a boon for the human kind. Internet has now become
a part and parcel of a person’s life. Internet has applications for
the people of all age groups. A small child uses the internet for
playing online games, a college going boy uses the internet for
academic purposes like making projects, getting online study
material etc. A man aged in his thirties or forties make use of the
internet for commercial purposes to develop his business and widen

a limited geographical area. For example the different computers in
a housing society or commercial complex can be connected to each
other by LAN. Next come the metropolitan area network or the MAN
which covers a larger geographical region, say a city and its
neighboring parts. The largest is the wide area network or the WAN
which represents the internet. This connects the computers all over
the world. A large number of internet service providers provide
internet connections on a local stage and all these internet service
providers are then together connected by the wide area network. This
is the architecture of the internet layout in brief.
A large number of internet service providers are currently present
in the market. These providers provide various internet connections
like dial-up connections that use a modem and a phone line, and then
we have triband connections and also broadband connections. The
broadband connections, more popularly known as the cable net
connection, are the most popularly used today in India. Here new
users can be accommodated in the same network and the bandwidth is
shared among the users but the disadvantage here is that as the
number of users increases the download speed reduces.
Uses: The basic function of the internet service providers is to
provide internet connections to the users that come under their
service area. The internet service providers can also provide
additional services to its customers like the LAN connections
through which the customers of the same internet service provider
can exchange data at a much faster rate as compared to the internet.
